You are a girl!

This title can be interpreted in two ways – positively,  negatively. Sadly the first thing that comes to me is negative.

Yes , this is so often used to insult that this particular sentence is something that no girl wants to hear anymore.

It is so liberally used by everyone – relatives, friends, colleagues , strangers and in some cases sadly parents too. Most saddening part is even girls/women use it without knowing the impact it is generating.

While most of them might not be aware of the impact of it or might not be even aware that it is insulting, it is not something I wish to hear anymore until the image changes.

Let the convos speak for themselves:

(guy/girl)Friend : I know a guy , he cries like a girl every-time he sees sad endings.

Me: Correction , he cries .period. Girls cry , guys cry. In-fact any human with emotions will cry. So he cries .

Friend: Here comes the supporter of the woman  ! Y don’t u take it on a lighter note .

Me: Well , I did for many years . Many do , which is the reason for the existence of this usage.

Colleague : Stop gossiping like a girl man !

Me: ahm , excuse me? (I ain’t gonna tolerate this every-time) . That’s very offensive I must say. I hope at-least educated people understand this.

Class mate: Y do u want to work when u can get married and chill? I have to work because I’m a guy

Girl: Because , I did not get bonus marks for being a girl in exams. I studied just as hard as u . I have to work because I’m a girl .

A stranger in bus: I see that you are travelling alone , where is ur husband?

Me: I am unmarried , I’m still studying.

Stranger: Haw! Girls shouldn’t study so much ! Just do some degree and get married , he will support u. Shop all day and enjoy.

Me: Looks like u r stuck in ancient times. Thank you for ur advice. But , please dont stop ur girl from studying if she wants to.

The most common one – your favorite color must be pink because you are a girl!

me: I have no favorite color. Yes , I don’t . I like each color on different things.

While many support girls studying now, small things like -stop acting like a girl , don’t cry like a girl , don’t be a girl , don’t gossip like a girl , don’t run like a girl etc etc – hurt even though we/I might not show it out , because if I do .. – I over react for everything because I’m a girl.

I hope people stop using those phrases . It’s not hard I promise. Next time just say stop gossiping , don’t cry.. isn’t it easy? Try it.

There is an ad that I came across which pretty much summarizes it all :

Are working women with kids ,selfish?

A very bold question that is .  Yet , it is the question being posed ,directly or indirectly by thousands of people across countries, to a lot of mothers. A misconception causing/forcing hundreds of women to leave the jobs after having kids !

This post has sprouted from a heated debate about women working after marriage, specifically after having kids.  Following are strongly spoken statements  , personally heard many of these from friends , relatives , strangers & so called ‘society!’ ! Are these expectations right?

If a woman refuses to give up her job after becoming a mother , she is selfish.

No , she wants to set an example to her child!

If a woman is career oriented ,  she doesn’t  care for the family.

That’s just ridiculous! Ever heard about  work-life balance?

If a woman prefers to work and not leave the job after marriage ,she is arrogant.

Yes, Apparently because there is no need for the woman to work ! what?!

If a woman wants to grow in her career and not just be a sit at home mother , she is deemed not to care about the kid . But, if the father works day and night and has no time for the family , he is deemed to be working for the family. why?

Because he is the man of the house. Period.

Motherly love is more crucial to the child than fathers , so the mother should leave the job for the sake of the child while the father supports the family! Mother blaming.

Wrong , check this research article!

Here comes A convo :

Bride seeking family: We want a woman who isn’t career-oriented and would leave the job if necessary!

Me:  Is this asked to a guy? No! Why?

BSF: Because , the guy cannot resign .

Me: Why?

BSF: Guy has responsibilities, he has to take care of the family!

Me: Stunned!

what do you mean by if necessary?

BSF: Once the kid is born , we want her to leave the job because mother’s love is important !

Me: How about father’s love? Will he leave the job if necessary?!

BSF: That’s why girls shouldn’t study too much!

Me: <It’s useless to talk ! >  I have to go.

While there are people supporting working women , many aren’t .

I hope this changes for good, because working women do care for their family and kids just as the working men do .

Success of Sindhu – social media

Watching Sindhu fight till the last minute showed the real spirit of her. While the whole world applauded and respected  the glorious success in the defeat (i wouldn’t call it a defeat, if it were for me) , a lot of sexist comments started swarming over .

As soon as the match ended , while the whole nation celebrated her, there were some disturbing statements going around. They are disturbing to me because even in the success, the focus is being shifted to irrelevant things in media.

I saw an article on xyz site which stated people are busy searching for her caste and goes ahead to talk about how sad it is etc. Firstly , this is something that shouldn’t be a piece of news to write an article about. The focus is being shifted from success and sports to mere gossip here, which I didn’t appreciate and am sure many others would agree with me on this.   < I don’t want to name the site or provide a link to the site because , I don’t want people reading it even by mistake.>

There are various jokes going around about how women , apart from getting vegetables also have to now get medals now , how women are succeeding because men started coaching and how wife is taunting her husband using this etc etc . While there are various variety of jokes going around and can be taken in light humour, it is making the success more of a new thing to gossip about and create jokes about rather than adding real value to the story.

There are always two sides to any story ;Even here I am not sure if I should be happy sports is coming into the lime-light or if I should be sad even sports fell prey to the internet sexist jokes and memes.

In any case , regardless of the gender , it’s a proud moment for India to see such brilliant performances .  While the story of Sindhu is being heard for good , there are many unheard ;Every single person who participated in Olympics this year strived his/her best and is equally glorious in our eyes.

Happy to see great changes happening in 2016 and looking forward to seeing more 🙂

Piece of cake review#8

Author: Swati Kaushal, an MBA grad from IIMC with another best seller “A girl like me” in her treasure chest.

I started this book when I decided to get a much needed break with an easy-going story to latch onto. I must say this book has reached beyond my expectations! When I first noticed she is an IIM grad , I was like ” yet another IIM grad writing book , let’s see  how this ! ”

To be honest , I was not very sure if this would cater to my current mood. But, it amazed me !

The book starts with a routine story of many girls where in the girl turns 29 and her parents are worried about her unmarried status. The first chapter establishes that she is an independent girl who also loves to get pampered , and I instantly connected with it.

It beautifully intertwines the business part with the crush-family drama part. I must say this book has great marketing ideas and sales plans. As every chapter proceeds the excitement levels go up . There are disguised villains and misunderstood characters , it has got every side of entertainment guaranteed.

It has given a peek into the business life, how  the market works , how the employees are expected to work, the deadlines, the presentations, the irritating peers , the innovative ideas . It gives an insight into what goes on behind a product development, marketing and sales. It’s an amazing book for marketing enthusiasts.

Keeping the business enthusiasts high , the book also engages the audience who love the boy next door stories. This book also has one such cute and hot guy , who is every girls dream , charming , talented . Unlike the fantasy stories , I must say the book keeps the story practical. It’s not – a cute boy, an independent girl trying to break out , they meet .. charming talks, cute scenes bang they get committed and married. No! It’s every girl’s story. You don’t just get married to your cute and amazingly talented neighbour !!

All in all , it’s a wonderful book to read while lazing out on a comfy couch and with a good coffee ;Rain is an amazing bonus to this , which I am lucky to get .. yay!

Holi Holi!

Holi the festival of colours is just a few days away ! With the India-Pak win , everyone is all the more excited . The shops are filled with all types of pitchkaris, colors , balloons ..what not !  That said , everyone is using various marketing strategies even in pitchkaris ; a minion pitchkari to attract the attention of all the kids. I’d say very well-played !

Holi being a celebration of colors and love , it has it’s own dangerous side. Every holi there are some reports about people going blind due to chemicals used in colors. When I was around 10 , I got totally scared of holi after reading various articles on the newspaper.

It’s better to opt for safe organic colors than go for the cheap ones. There is definitely a price to pay if you decide to go cheap on them. Also , some colors can be very very sticky and particularly very irritating. Specially if you are sporting your favourite dress and the colors won’t just come off .

This festival reminds us of the victory of good over evil, as always. Bhang is a drink specially found during Holi, which is said to give nasha to the people. The more one dances , the more it kicks in. It makes you forget all the worries in the life and gives a high on life.

For a photographer Holi is an absolute delight to attend. The beautiful colors combined with the whole hearted smiles on the faces of the people gives amazing clicks. For a traveller visiting India for the first time , Holi would be an unexpected beautiful welcome to the culture of India.

I can go on and on about Holi , how it has a special place in every kid’s heart . Though it is widely celebrated in India , it is mainly a part of the North Indian culture , with only a few places in South celebrating it. The best part about Holi is, one can go around smearing colors on the faces of anyone and everyone , friend or stranger, rich or poor, man or woman, children and elders. It is an amazing sight to watch , if you aren’t someone who likes getting the dress dirty.

Happy Holi everyone.. have a colourful and cheerful Holi.

Holi hai! :)

With Holi right around the corner , everyone has started purchasing colors, gifts , booking tickets to home town, quite a festive mood! What does one get reminded of hearing the word holi? Colors of-course! It’s a world of beautiful colors! Apart from being a festival of colors, it’s another reason to fly back to your families and have that awesome home cooked meals 🙂

The only Holi that I celebrated is the one I don’t even remember! Strange ? Yes, it is strange. The reason is because , it was when I was a 2 years old! I barely remember the stuff I did when I was in fifth standard ! Talk about being 2 years old, it’s impossible to recall.

I’ve heard a lot of stories about it though, I had one helluva time on my first holi. I’ve dropped water balloons onto the people dressed up in formal wear and going to office 😀 I’ve sprayed colors from the water gun from the highest floor onto the people . I have rung the door bells and stood there while the my sisters and their gang sprayed the colors and ran away! How sweet of them to let me ring the door bells -_-

Of-course I had help ! There was a tall chair to bring me to the right height so that I can drop those water filled balloons onto the uncles and aunties wearing pure white dresses 😛 Oh yes, it was mandatory to wear white that day as I hear. I used to love spraying the water colors onto people apparently! Though I have a suspicion that my sisters did and I was used as the bait! I’m a little kid , they can’t be angry seeing my innocent puppy-eye face!

Oh ! oh! and holi is full of gifts! Or rather just another reason to go out and shop in the name of giving gifts 😀 I love that idea though. I love receiving gifts as much as planning to gift 🙂

Well, at-least I did have fun even if it was in my childhood 🙂 I’m definitely planning on bringing back that days full of festive colors again ..

Happy holi everyone.. have a safe holi! (yes, you heard that right, not safe diwali  safe holi; colors can be dangerous too!) Enjoy the family gatherings, have lots of food and put that sweet little fat under your bellies.:P
