Piece of cake review#8

img_20160515_003818.jpg

Author: Swati Kaushal, an MBA grad from IIMC with another best seller “A girl like me” in her treasure chest.

I started this book when I decided to get a much needed break with an easy-going story to latch onto. I must say this book has reached beyond my expectations! When I first noticed she is an IIM grad , I was like ” yet another IIM grad writing book , let’s see  how this ! ”

To be honest , I was not very sure if this would cater to my current mood. But, it amazed me !

The book starts with a routine story of many girls where in the girl turns 29 and her parents are worried about her unmarried status. The first chapter establishes that she is an independent girl who also loves to get pampered , and I instantly connected with it.

It beautifully intertwines the business part with the crush-family drama part. I must say this book has great marketing ideas and sales plans. As every chapter proceeds the excitement levels go up . There are disguised villains and misunderstood characters , it has got every side of entertainment guaranteed.

It has given a peek into the business life, how  the market works , how the employees are expected to work, the deadlines, the presentations, the irritating peers , the innovative ideas . It gives an insight into what goes on behind a product development, marketing and sales. It’s an amazing book for marketing enthusiasts.

Keeping the business enthusiasts high , the book also engages the audience who love the boy next door stories. This book also has one such cute and hot guy , who is every girls dream , charming , talented . Unlike the fantasy stories , I must say the book keeps the story practical. It’s not – a cute boy, an independent girl trying to break out , they meet .. charming talks, cute scenes bang they get committed and married. No! It’s every girl’s story. You don’t just get married to your cute and amazingly talented neighbour !!

All in all , it’s a wonderful book to read while lazing out on a comfy couch and with a good coffee ;Rain is an amazing bonus to this , which I am lucky to get .. yay!

The Story of Lucius Cane review #6

luciuscane

To start with , it is pretty much a short story with about 20 pages; and the first book of the series .

The start is pretty interesting when I did not have any prior knowledge about the book . I prefer to keep the suspense intact and hence never read the reviews before starting the book.

If started without any knowledge of what the book is about , the first two chapters are the most interesting ones. Though the suspense wouldn’t last long , as they are  pretty short , they are the best.

I felt if each chapter was a lengthy one , there would have been more time to build the characters and slowly plunge into the story. The storyline is really good , loved the way two characters were introduced. After the introduction of the characters , I started predicting the story, I wish there were unexpected twists.

All in all, the storyline though really good , the shortness of the story took away the suspense time frame. A few more characters in it would have made it more interesting  and exciting. As the story is about my fav fiction characters , I enjoyed reading it anyway.

For a short story,It’s a really good one to read while travelling (a half-one hour drive story), while having a cup of coffee/tea early in the morning. In the end , a common feeling the readers get is I wish there was more to the story 🙂 . Hoping to see an expanded storyline in book2 with more exciting parts . Can’t wait to read it 🙂

Thank you Vanya for sending it out to me to review 🙂

Scion of Ikshvaku review #5

Author: Amish Tripathi , IIM graduate , ” a boring banker turned happy author” as his site says, is someone who finds passion in every religion.

Until I read this book , I despised Ram . Yes , you read that right . I used to hate him because I never really understood his character much. From what I heard about him and from what I read in Ramayan, I hated him for abandoning Sita and doubting her . In short, for following “the law, for his people” .

I read Amish’s “Trilogy” before which made me look at Shiva in an entirely new perspective. I was dubious about reading this book about Ram. I thought I might hate it given that I hated him already. But his approach and the logical way of connecting things gave me some hope to start this book.

The book starts describing Dasharath and the current condition of Ayodhya due to which the war with “the Lanka ruler” emerges. The start gives a clear view of how each one’s character is and how the land of Ayodhya is . For a soul with high imagination , it is as clear as a movie (atleast it was to me). It then proceeds to the battle being lost with Raavan and The birth of Ram  at the exact same hour. The war between Dasharath and Raavan shows how powerful two of them are and where did Dasharath lack . In any case , it creates powerful image for both Raavan and Dasharath.

It then proceeds to show how the birth of Ram was considered as a curse by Dasharath and the entire kingdom . As the childhood of Ram and the brothers was so neatly taken on , the readers feel a close connection to them and start to visualise them as kids growing up. The part about childhood is what changed my perspective about Ram entirely. It was v easy to connect to the mentality of the three and understand why they were the way they were.

I grew particularly fond of Lakshman , who cutely declares himself the protector of his elder brother Ram as a kid. Ram , despite people calling him a cursed one , saw only the good in people and is a calm , honest and a pure one. Bharath on the other hand seems very much realistic, practical and smart. Shatrughan , the smartest of all is a bookworm and the knowledge database for the rest of his brothers. The contrast of the mentalities among these 4 can be clearly observed in various scenes beautifully written by Amish.

After etching the mentalities of all the kids  into reader’s minds , the story proceeds as to what circumstances made Ram marry Sita, why he had to go for 14 year exile, why Bharath was crowned, why didn’t Urmila join Ram , Sita and Lakshman etc. A very important thing to note here is this story is different from the mythological one spoken about.

It gives a fresh perspective about not just Ram and other characters , but the entire story and every single action done has a logical reason. For eg: why Ram had to go to 14 year old exile ? According to mythology it was because of Kaikeyi alone ! That made Kaikeyi the extremely bad one and Sita the most <I dunno what to call, innocent?> for going along with Ram for 14 years. Here , why Sita accompanied him also has a reason , why Ram had to go also has a reason and why didnt Ram remain crown prince in his exile also has a reason.

I found the answers to various questions that troubled me about Ramayan. This fresh perspective about how Ramayan might have taken place is truly refreshing and logical (if you are looking for answers like me). It also connects to Nagas and has a different view about when Shiva would have origined . As a whole , it’s an entirely new perspective to look at , beautiful one too 🙂

Having said that , I loved this book which ,however is just a part of Ramayan . Don’t want to reveal more and spoil the surprise element when you encounter that difference in story. A lot of incidents have been changed as per Author’s freedom. I recommend this book to everyone who loves and hates Ramayan .. It can change the way you looked at it. If started with an open mind that ,there can be different versions of Ramayan and willing to accept changes from actual mythology, I promise that it will be a lovely read. 🙂

Happy Reading everyone 🙂

Half girlfriend review #4

Half Girlfriend.jpg

Having a bad impression to start with , I looked down on this book the minute I heard of it. Never having enjoyed his books ,except 2 states at that point (which also sounds so insane to me now) , I was already biased . I never wanted to read it at all . But with the new year vibes around , decided I should stop being so biased and maybe give some benefit of doubt and start it. And that’s how the journey began…

I stress this again that I’m totally unbiased now !! To start with , half girlfriend is written by the Chetan Bhagat who has 6 block bluster books and a lot more to him  htps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chetan_Bhagat

The story starts with a boy approaching Chetan Bhagat with some journals of a girl and asking him to read , because he never can . It then dives into the past of the boy and the girl in the journal . Madhav Jha , the boy in the story gets an interview at St Stephens college and so does the girl Riya in sports quota.

Being a guy who isn’t fluent in English , the mind set of Madhav is well explained. It proceeds well , till the part where the guy starts liking her . I didn’t like the way Madhav tries to force on her even though she isn’t comfortable . The worst came when his friends give him a stupid suggestion and he goes ahead and implements it ! This part did not work for me! If not , the image created about a guy is totally negative here.

Moving ahead , the story moves on and the part of the girl also doesn’t seem good ! I remember cursing both 😀  After about half way thru , I started liking it for the only reason that the rural self maintained school came into picture. The rest of the story is about how he managed to make the school better and how . There sure is a twist which I haven’t expected , actually two twists ! Though after the twist is reached , I felt of course this was bound to happen , so bollywood filmy type. Nothing so unique about it , pretty much same type.

I’m not sure if the books are written to become bollywood films or the films are made from the books if his! However this is good for someone who is just starting to read a novel as the language is pretty easy to understand, who doesn’t analyse the characters  too much , who is well like those characters themselves i guess 😛

I wouldn’t recommend it to srs book lovers , beginners yes , light reading without srs analysing (maybe! ). I finished it in 2 days yay. The first book for this year challenge done. To be honest , this book didn’t suit my way of thinking , hence the review above . 🙂

“Best seller she wrote” review #3

41omsgxjhml-_sx338_bo1204203200_

Author : ” Best seller she wrote ” is written by Ravi Subramanian an alumnus of IIMB. A best selling author who won a lot of awards and is a banker too.

The book sets off awaiting the guest at IIMB packed auditorium , this has set the image high up for the guest in question already. The entry of the main character Mr Aditya Kapoor has set off marvellously. He then goes on to talk about being a writer and a best selling author when he gets interrupted by a girl. An intense exchange of words go on and will be later settled by the girl. With a lovely doting wife and the pretty fan girl who aspires to be an author, what would happen further? I wouldn’t be revealing that .

Things to notice are that the actual professional life of a best selling author is very well portrayed. The hurdles faced  by the author on how to market a book once its written , create the plot, publicize it etc.  The work-life balance is very well indicated by describing the happy family life and the work life which is moving  at an amazing pace. It also shows how a famous , rock star writer has his normal life moments .

The subtle friendship fights and the bond of friendship which goes through various hits is very well portrayed. Though, the only thing that seemed like a set-back or which made my interest levels go low suddenly is the similarity between a current best selling author and the Aditya regarding an event. Though I didn’t feel quite good when such a doting wife is getting side-tracked. It is quite engaging and takes you into the shoes of the author later making everything seem quite understandable.

The character of the girl who aspires to be an author is very well portrayed , though it seemed a lil off at first as to why is she doing it , eventually as the story drains in any such q’s slowly disappear. A strong girl with a lot of confidence in herself, the fan-girl as I call her is impressive in chasing her dream of becoming an author also clearly stating to have a safe job side by side. This clearly explained the though process of a lot of writers who fear to have it as the only job . They would rather have it as a passion and leave the actual stability and money machine coming from another job.

It’s good for a light read with coffee in the mornings on weekends .. enjoying cool breeze and with a film enacting in your head as you read it over.  I started it out with a dilemma as to if it will turn out to be any regular book and might lose out interest, instead I actually had fun reading it. The story line might not be so different and expected but it is engaging . Have fun reading 🙂
